12/23/09 EFAC's Chicago Event

On December 12, friends and family gathered in a Chicago suburb to celebrate the holidays and the work of EFAC. The Indian community of Naperville came together for an evening of fun and celebration. After hearing about the work of EFAC from Rod and Nancy Van Sciver, all 100 guests enjoyed dinner and entertainment.

We enjoyed a talent show and fancy dress contest, as well as musical performances from Shree Mohanty and Pratibha Jairath among others. It was a great night where we had the opportunity to increase nationwide awareness of EFAC.

Many of our guests were particularly excited to talk about EFAC's future and the potential for EFAC to work in India. Thanks to everyone who helped to make the event such a fun evening!

12/15/09 ~ EFAC Board Retreat

With thoughtful consideration of the organization's history and a collective eye to the future, the Education For All Children board and advisory board gathered Friday, December 4th for an all-day retreat to combine their creative and philanthropic energy. Under the guidance of facilitator Joan Marchessault of Strategic Leadership Consulting Group, the members participated in a brainstorming session. The collaborative effort further defined the mission of the organization and created a clear vision of the future of EFAC and its role in the lives of the underprivileged children it seeks to serve.

The morning session focused on a review of where the organization has been, including successes and challenges. The cooperative ideas and suggestions of each member produced this mission statement:
"Education For All Children provides scholarships, mentoring and global connections to exceptional students in developing countries in order to encourage leadership, economic progress, cultural understanding and a more peaceful world."

During the afternoon session, the participants turned their attention toward the future and the direction in which EFAC is ideally heading, and turned out this promising vision statement:
"Built upon a scalable model and fueled by a network of local stakeholders, EFAC will change the world by providing educational opportunities for children in developing countries."

It is the passion and dedication of the board and the generosity of donors and volunteers that underscores the shared belief that education is a vital contribution to the common goal of bringing a positive change to our world. Education For All Children is committed to continuing this mission.

12/9/09 ~ Education: Securing Global Future

Nine years ago, heads of states from around the world gathered at the UN headquarters to discuss global poverty and make Millennium Development Goals. The agreed upon goal was to give every child a primary education by 2015 beginning in 2010. The U.S. Government has offer $2 billion toward the cause. In addition to the government funding some small organizations, like EFAC, are supporting students.

Shakira, an international musician and the founder of Pies Descalazos (Barefoot), an organization educating displaced children in Colombia, wrote an article in The Economist Magazine regarding the need to educate. She wrote, "I refuse to believe that it isn't possible to educate every child. By establishing a Global Fund for Education in 2010 we will invest in these children's future - and help to secure our own." According to the article, globally 72 million children are denied education and 226 million will not attend secondary school.

Today EFAC has 90 Kenyan scholarship students enrolled in the best schools in the country, only costing $2 per day. The EFAC scholar's already show promise by becoming educated supporters of their own communities and beyond. Shakira wrote, "No child dreams of becoming a militant or a drug trafficker. But in developing countries sometimes life doesn't give you another option." It is terrible to waste a brilliant mind. Help us educate the likes of Wangari Maathai, and William Kamkwamba. These are the people who will create a safe and more peaceful world.
